"But if I release Barabbas," Pilate asked them, "what should I do with this man you call the King of the Jews?" They shouted back, "Crucify him!" (Mark 15:12-13)(NLT)
As Pilate tried to figure out the charges being brought against Jesus, he settled on the charge that Jesus claimed to be King of the Jews. This title, which was probably the closest concept Pilate had for the Jewish idea of a "Messiah," made Jesus guilty according to Roman law. So Jesus was officially executed as "King of the Jews." Three days later Jesus' resurrection bore out the truth of this charge. Jesus, indeed, is the promised King, who now reigns over his people for all eternity. Let us give him honor and praise.
O LORD OUR KING, we honor you as the King of kings and Lord of lords. We praise you for humbling yourself to suffer death on the cross for our sake. Help us to faithfully serve you, for we subject ourselves to your rule. Amen.
